Origins and Destinies  "So the king (Jeroboam) took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, 'You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt...He also made houses on high places, and appointed priests from among the people who were not of the Levites. And Jeroboam appointed a feast...and he offered sacrifices...in the month which he had devised in his own heart..." (1 Kings 12: 28-33)

Sacred Cows

Their ornaments are in your house

The making of golden calves as idols was not new to Israelites. They did it right after being rescued from Egypt, at the foot of Mount Sinai, before receiving the Ten Commandments. They copied a statue of Apis, the golden calf of Egypt, and used it for worship in the name of Yahweh. The almost irresistible ancient bull of Babylon and his cow-consort and calf-child have appeared as a "holy family" in many religions.  Hindus still revere the cow as sacred. Everybody knows that. But what is really astounding is that Christians look upon this as superstition, unaware that what they are doing is exactly the same thing!

What Jeroboam did was a perfect picture of the Christian Church. He took something pagan and revered it in the name of the Lord, blending the two and declaring in effect to the people that the Lord would not mind. How many times have you heard Christians use that excuse? Even rank pagans and atheists see right through it. Jeroboam built religious houses (churches) and appointed priests that were not of the Lord's instituting. He substituted a festival and sacrifices that were not decreed or given by God. Like the people at Mount Sinai destruction was inevitable. The whole house of Jeroboam (except one individual) was "utterly consumed as a man burns dung until it is gone" and their carcasses became food for dogs and birds. (1 Kings 14)

The Christian Church is not so brazen as to have a physical golden calf (nothing so obvious; the strategy is now extremely subtle) but it has exactly the same illegitimate  houses, priests, feasts and sacrifices, all pagan and all blended with and kept in the name of God. These are their sacred cows. Churchmen will defend them all to the hilt despite the approaching holocaust when they too will be completely obliterated from the face of the earth while still clinging to these treasured and fatal attractions. For that is the sure and certain penalty. Death. It's so obvious yet they cannot see it. Amazing.
